What are Family Supports?

Family supports, when they are centered around individuals with disabilities, include: diagnosis and assessment; therapeutic services; medical/dental services; home health care; recreational opportunity; special clothing and diets; transportation; adaptive equipment; housing adaptations; and adequate health insurance. (National Center for Family Support)

Family supports, when they are centered around family members, include: information and referral; service coordination; temporary relief/respite; family counseling; parent/sibling education; day or family member care; financial assistance; future financial planning; mutual support groups; and housing modifications. (National Center for Family Support)

Whether they are centered around individuals with disabilities or family members, family supports are a continuum of services and programs across the lifespan of both parties, with a realization that breadth and depth of need of these supports vary within and across families.
